Poetry Really is designed to promote fun by encouraging young students to experiment with language and form as they generate their own poetry. By breaking down language into syllables and words and then offering various structures, students begin to create their own poetry. At the same time, the PowerPoint presentation allows for sound and imagery to be explored in a very real manner. All of these elements, and not just the word on the page, make poetry.
Many of the traditional poetic forms are utilised; basic quatrains and haikus. But students are also encouraged to see poetry in the sound and language of their environment. An activity sheet underpins each strategy offered on the screen. There are also links to Internet sites where concepts are further developed and explored. Students also have the opportunity to hear poems and generate a sense of rhythm and cadence. This makes for a very immediate and practical resource allowing for an exploration of poetry in all its dimensions.
Geared for junior secondary levels, the PowerPoint presentation allows for a variety of learning intelligence's and modes to be utilised to engage a full range of students. The presentation and activity sheets work in tandem to provide a visual experience where sound and movement captures a student's imagination. Students are further encouraged to generate their own work and apply the principles to which they have been introduced.
