This material is the fourth of five volumes developed to help teachers deliver topics from the “Analytical Methods for Engineers” Unit – a Mathematical unit.
Each volume is concerned with one of the four main learning outcomes of the unit.
This volume is the second of two which focus on Calculus.
Topics include the differentiation of hyperbolic functions and the inverse trigonometric and hyperbolic functions, the use of natural logarithms in differentiation, integration by algebraic substitution, trigonometric substitution, hyperbolic substitution and by parts.
The five well-structured PowerPoint presentations aim to position learners to meet some of the four pass criteria for the Calculus part of the unit.
The 50 slides explain concepts, methods and problem-solving techniques in a unique, clear and consistent manner. The presentations are colour coded to distinguish between the presentation of concepts, setting of problems, problem-solving, thought processes and emphasis.
Each presentation starts with a title slide followed by the learning objectives for the presentation. There follows a step-by-step, no frills, method of delivery for the concepts involved, often incorporating worked example. It is suggested that the learners be given the opportunity to attempt examples for themselves at appropriate places in the presentation. This, plus the advanced level of the work, may well result in any particular presentation providing material for more than one teaching session. Topics can be introduced at a pace consistent with the ability of any particular group of learners.
This series of presentations forms part of a developing library at BTEC First, National and Higher levels in Engineering and Construction.
