These notes address three essential areas of study within the discipline of psychology: visual perception, play and persuasive messages.

Visual perception begins as an organic sensation. Light leaves an object at a given distance. The rods and cones in our retina receive these light waves. The resultant electrical impulses are sent to the brain causing activity in our brain cells. When the brain has registered and decoded these impulses then a form of understanding has been achieved. This involves a psychological process where higher order mental abilities are brought to bear such as learning, experience and memory.

Play is essential in developing social behaviour. The interaction that takes place enables children to explore different roles over a range of relationships with peers, siblings, parents, neighbours and friends. In the course of this interaction a child learns the essential 'rules' for a particular relationship or environment, thus building the repertoire of skills necessary for social interaction in the immediate and distant future.

Persuasive messages - Our attitudes towards sport, school, the environment and religion are not genetically bred into us. Our opinions and attitudes are developed from our experiences over an extended period of time through the process of learning. Psychologists have identified three basic forms of learning: classical conditioning, operant conditioning and modelling. The activities in these notes allow students to appreciate how we are persuaded by these elements and to address the source factors, the messages factors and the receiver factors behind forms of communication. This leads to an outline of the report writing process that will enable students to write up their findings and observations.

Students are taken through a series of activities to help build an understanding of these essential areas. Definitions of terms are acquired and practical activities allow students to explore their understanding through observation of the world around them. This leads to an outline of the report writing process necessary when conducting psychological research.
