Pack L1 - Reaction & Reform
This series covers the reigns of George IV (regent from 1811, king 1820-1830) and William IV (1830-37). The period was notable for deep-rooted social discontent following the Napoleonic War. The economic effects of the industrial and agricultural revolutions produced widespread outbreaks of disorder and demands for reforms. At first this was sporadic and limited to specific issues like law and order, prisons and Catholic emancipation. After 1830 the movement spread to a nation-wide campaign to reform parliament itself. By making parliament more democratic and representative in 1832, much more fundamental issues such as poverty and factory conditions became subject to legislation from 1833 onwards.
