The 'Reading Record' provides 11-14 year old students with an opportunity to take control of their reading, evaluate and review their progress and make informed judgements on their reading habits. The 'Reading Record' is designed to help students and teachers keep a close track on why, what, how, where and when students read. At the start of each academic year, students are asked to complete a questionnaire about their reading habits. They are asked to review their progress at regular intervals so that by the time students reach 14 years of age, they hold a Reading Journal of the past three years. As the 'Reading Record' is completed in part at the end of each academic year, it can be passed on to the next English teacher who can add to its contents and measure student progress.
The 'Reading Record' allows teachers to direct students through a variety of responses according to individual student need. There are more than twenty activities in the Reading Record', most of which include photocopiable templates. The activities include a range of writing styles: informative; personal, formal, visual, imaginative; creative; narrative; descriptive and analytical.
The 'Reading Record' provides guidance for both the long and short term and can be used either in its entirety or selectively, depending on student and teacher requirements. Students are encouraged to take responsibility for individual study and complete a full range of assignments in readiness for GCSE courses.
