If we are not careful, 'respect' can be an empty slogan, with no meaning in daily life. The activities outlined in these materials teach respect top-down and bottom-up, in other words through discussion of the principle, and through being in situations where respectful behaviour is necessary. They are written to emphasise that people are diverse, with diverse needs, and that this adds to the wealth of human experience. Furthermore, that considering a situation from other people's points of view leads to respect, and builds negotiation skills. Finally, the materials contribute to a flexibility of thinking that can be used in academic subjects across the board.

The activities included in this book can be used with students in all secondary year groups. Teachers' notes give suggestions on variations, as well as issues that can be discussed in final plenaries. But of course, human diversity being what it is, the students in your school may respond in totally different ways from those who have already worked through the activities...

The final section of the book is a series of 'Thought for the Week' type posters. They can be displayed at the same time as the activities are being done, or at different times, to provoke discussion and follow up activities.

The twenty minute film has been made in Australia but it deals with the topic in a manner totally relevant and familiar to the UK. The presenter gives a factual account of the dangers of smoking. The viewer learns what exactly is inside a cigarette and what are the poisonous substances such as tar and nicotine. Addiction to smoking is discussed and the opinion of experts is presented. Victims of smoking describe and show the harmful effects of nicotine addiction on their lives and their health. A group of teenagers give their opinions why young people take up smoking and what could be effective ways of saying 'no' to smoking.

The booklet contains information and exercises to support the film, including an introductory quiz to initiate a discussion in small groups. Information sheets are provided which can be used as A4 or A3 posters or given to pupils individually or in small groups. There are a number of exercises that can be used to fit the style and length of the lesson as well as the age and the ability of the students.

The resource is designed to be used flexibly by teachers and to provide a stimulus for a discussion on a subject that affects the health of our children.
