How can RE attract interest from new generations of pupils? This is a crucial question and one which confronts all RE teachers, from experienced departmental leaders to recently graduated NQTs. One way of developing fresh interest in RE is by tapping into those things which have always intrigued children, namely mysteries and puzzles.
The Sacred Detective Mysteries are designed to evoke an interest in religion by allowing pupils to use detective skills, to solve a series of religious mysteries relating to Buddhism. Pupils are given the opportunity to learn about a specific religion by following the Sacred Detective on his adventures.
The scheme of work introduces the beliefs and practices of the Buddhist religion and draws heavily upon literacy, by using a simple narrative to convey information relevant to the topic. Although intended to be delivered to pupils aged 11-14, the basic themes can be used with older children.
The activity sheets attached to each lesson contain a central aim and can be used by both specialist and non-specialist teachers. The information required for each lesson is contained within each sheet, although the extension questions in the scheme of work encourage pupils to explore and reflect on concepts more deeply.
The Sacred Detective Mysteries aim to excite interest in RE for a new generation of children whilst developing key literacy and reasoning skills. By offering pupils the chance to develop such skills they will become better equipped to explore and research RE for themselves.
