How can RE attract interest from new generations of pupils? This is a crucial question and one which confronts all RE teachers, from experienced departmental leaders to recently graduated NQTs.

One way of developing fresh interest in RE is by tapping into those things which have always intrigued children, namely mysteries and puzzles.

The Sacred Detective Mysteries - The Jigsaw Puzzle explores the exciting world of philosophy and religion, giving pupils the opportunity to learn about key concepts and issues by following the Sacred Detective on his adventures.

The scheme of work introduces philosophical and moral questions in a religious context and draws heavily upon literacy by using a simple narrative to convey information relevant to the topic. Although designed to be used with pupils aged 11-14, the basic themes can be used with older children.

The activity sheets attached to each lesson contain a central aim and can used by both specialist and non-specialist teachers. The information required for each lesson is contained within each sheet, although the extension questions in the scheme of work encourage pupils to explore and reflect on concepts more deeply.

The Sacred Detective Mysteries aim to excite interest in RE for a new generation of children whilst developing important literacy and reasoning skills. By offering pupils the chance to develop such skills they will become better equipped to explore and research into RE for themselves.
