Safety is always a major concern in any situation, and children must be made aware of its importance. This teaching material has been developed to provide all departments with some easy-to-use and stand alone lesson plans covering aspects of leisure, road, child, food and retired couples' safety. These may be especially useful when a member of staff is absent and cover work is required. These lesson plans offer quality work for staff who are called upon to teach or support these topics in various areas of the curriculum e.g. Design and Technology, PSHE (Personal Social Health Education) or tutorial work. They could also be part of normal lesson plans for 11-14 year olds and possibly for 14-16 year olds. This material has been developed to accommodate unforeseen and urgent situations that may arise in hectic departments. Most importantly, the material has been designed for a wide range of abilities and is suitable for both boys and girls. Each topic has a full set of photocopiable worksheets that give clear instructions to staff as to how to administer the material, together with discussion points and a list of the resources required. The students' worksheets set out the brief/topic together with a format showing how this is to be achieved successfully. All of the sheets contained in this resource are based on a wide range of safety situations. The material has been designed with the knowledge that not all lessons are allocated the same amount of time; therefore, the work set can accommodate this. This material could provide a valuable contribution to raising students' awareness of safety in their environment.
