Be adventurous. Here are ten 'for and against' issues (meaning twenty essays) on cannabis, smoking, animal rights, genetic modification of foods, the nurture/nature debate, nuclear power, Science/Religion, global warming, school food and whether 'scientists have too much intelligence and too little wisdom' (which covers many areas). With them are comprehension questions, ICT extensions, further resources, assorted enrichment activities, quotations and a cartoon making the resource suitable for use in a range of ways from introducing topics, as plenary activities, to provide 'cover' lessons and more. It is, though, most suitable for average and better students. It is worth noting that the essays have a scientific base but have been designed to stimulate discussion about the implications of science, rather than a detailed analysis of the actual science, which is left to the teacher. It is also excellent for Citizenship!
This resource has been specifically created with an awareness of the 2006 GCSE Science curriculum and, in particular, the need for students to engage with 'scientific evidence and society'. All Science departments would benefit from this resource as it has a unique perspective and is ideal for the demands of the new syllabus.
