Silas Marner by George Eliot: a Special Educational Needs/English as an Additional Language Guide
'Silas Marner' is set in 19th century England and is the story of a weaver who has lost faith in God and men, who regains his faith in God and other human beings through his fatherly relationship with Eppie, a young girl.
These materials are suitable for students, aged 14-16, of all abilities. They are particularly useful for students with Special Educational Needs or English as an Additional Language and promote the development of reading, writing, spelling, comprehension and listening skills.
Each chapter is summarised for ease of comprehension, and so those pupils can understand it that may find the original version difficult. Understanding of the text is further supported through questions, a sequencing activity and a multiple choice activity. Answers are provided. There is also an assessment and monitoring record sheet, for teachers and pupils to monitor progress made in reading and spelling the target words from 'Silas Marner', and a word and definition activity.
With clear links to the National Strategy for Literacy and Learning these materials provide a useful additional approach to supporting pupils' learning.
