This grammar handbook was originally written for students aged 14 plus, whose complaint was that they did not understand the basics of the language. It is suitable for classroom use or for self-study.
It covers the key elements of the language needed for GCSE and beyond, in short sections, and is immediately accessible to the reader because it does not assume any knowledge of technical terms. Abler students from Years 8 and 9 can use it to learn the basic elements of French grammar; students in Years 10 and 11 can use it for revision or for clarification of areas not fully understood.
The range of subjects covered includes the usual determiners; numbers, time and date expressions; nouns; adjectives; adverbs; verbs, including all the necessary tenses and structures using the infinitive pronouns; negatives; and question formation. Everything is explained in straightforward terms, also giving the technical names so that the student can proceed with confidence to more formal grammar books / grammar sections of textbooks. At each point there are short examples, which are translated into English. Essential items are recommended for learning.
There is a table of 25 essential irregular verbs in the Present, Perfect and Future tenses only. The table is therefore less daunting than those found in most textbooks, and aims to encourage the learner to concentrate on the most vital and common elements.
