The Sixth-Form Debating Pack consists of five essays on controversial topics: Animal Rights, UFOs, Fairies, Atlantis and the Historicity of Jesus.
Each essay contains sufficient factual material, together with deductions to be made from it for discussion and debate within the context of sixth-form English and/or Philosophy groups. The material would also be ideally suited to the purposes of a school debating society.
The essays are in the nature of introductions to the topics and, whilst not giving comprehensive coverage or detail, they are intended to stimulate opinion and individual research. The suggestions for workshops on the topics emphasise comprehension not only of the material, but of the way in which it is presented, providing an opportunity to use discrimination and to examine the effect that the material may have on preconceived beliefs and opinions.
The material should be viewed as supplementary to the main English syllabus, providing additional exercise in comprehension with an emphasis on verbal discussion. Students should nevertheless by encouraged to write down their thoughts on the workshop suggestions and condense an argument for the purposes of classroom debate. Ideally, they should attempt research on their own account in order further to support their conclusions. For this purpose, a brief list of publications is given at the end of each essay.
