Something Beginning With... is a reverse dictionary, where the definition is the question rather than the answer. The 24 alphabetical worksheets, word banks and answer sheets provide an easy and enjoyable way of improving musical literacy for examination candidates in the 14 - 18 age range. As each worksheet stands alone, the letters can be given out in any order as regular homework assignments or end-of-lesson fillers. Each set of questions covers an extremely diverse and interesting range of musical information and trivia. Many can be answered quickly and easily using musical knowledge already acquired or intelligent guesswork, resulting in improved student confidence. Others require much greater investigation, encouraging curiosity and developing research skills.
Most sheets can be completed in 20 minutes or less. Kept on file by the students as each letter is completed, the resource builds up to be an invaluable piece of reference material, sometimes overlapping and frequently going beyond traditional music dictionaries. Questions can also be asked verbally by the teacher, choosing only words appropriate to the students’ need or knowledge. This method also enables greater usage of the resource with benefits extending to younger students. The answers themselves can be used to provide a framework for revision or serve as quiz questions and, where appropriate, written questions can be replaced by musical examples. Additional benefit can be gained by categorising the word banks into harmonic/melodic vocabulary, musical styles and periods, performance directions etc. A fun and challenging resource for all!
