Whether you are teaching 'synthetic' phonics or teaching the speech sounds letters represent, you need a good bank of words giving as many examples as possible. As I could not find any comprehensive phonic lists, I produced my own.
The resource has 6 sections:
- Sonic Phonics 1. Consonant-vowel-consonant words and Consonant blends.
- Sonic Phonics 2. Simple endings.
- Sonic Phonics 3. Magic 'e'. (Split vowel digraphs.)
- Sonic Phonics 4. Vowel phonemes.
- Sonic Phonics 5. Problem phonemes. (ce- , ge- , ph etc.)
- Sonic Phonics 6. Silent letters.
It is essential that before using this resource for reading (or spelling), pupils know their Initial Letter Sounds. I have included a checklist at the beginning of the resource.
The lists in each section have been put in alphabetical order to aid quick access. Where possible, each phoneme has been divided into an easy section and a harder section. The words are arranged in letter strings, e.g. 'ee', 'eech', 'eed', 'eef', 'eek' etc. to maximise the rhyming aspect.
As there seem to be exceptions to every rule, I have included some exceptions in the resource. They are either in brackets or have a section at the bottom of the page. There are also unexpected letters in some words. I have underlined these letters, e. g. Monday.
Sonic Phonics is a straightforward, easy to use resource for everybody involved in teaching phonics, from teachers in Primary Schools to those involved in Adult Literacy Schemes.
