Texts for Bilingual Pupils

Quite often the content of the National Curriculum can be intractable for pupils who speak English as a second language. The teaching of English can now be made wholly accessible using these new photocopiable resources. Set texts have now been effectively differentiated so that they are understood by pupils who may find the original versions difficult.

The texts chosen have been widely used in English and Special Needs classrooms and promote the development of reading, writing and listening skills. They have proven to be very popular because of their accessibility and at the end of each section there are a series of stimulating exercises which are designed to enhance language acquisition. Developing literary appreciation is an integral part of the National Curriculum and these resources are designed to develop this skill.

Romeo & Juliet is one of the most popular love stories of all time. It is a favourite in schools at both KS3 and KS4

Classic texts can be very difficult to understand for students not fully conversant with the English language, or with special learning needs. However, the difficulty of the language that these texts have been written in can be mitigated against by an abridged version that seeks to communicate the essential meanings, themes and symbolism of the texts. Moreover, characterisations can be clarified and illuminated so that students can more easily relate to and empathise with what motivates their actions.

Accompanying the texts are stimulating exercises to enhance language acquisition. These work alongside each act, encouraging students to recognise the personality traits of the main characters in an attempt to understand why they act as they do. Students are also asked to think about turning points in the story and how characters change as a result of the actions of others.

The texts chosen have been widely used in English and special needs classrooms and promote the development of reading, writing and listening skills.

Grammar is Easy, Teacher!

Grammar is Easy, Teacher!

Subject: Special Educational Needs
Level: Secondary
Age Group: 11 - 14
Order Number: 5253

Grammar is Easy, Teacher! serves the needs of anyone who wishes to improve his or her English language skills:

  1. The native speaker who feels his written and spoken English needs work.
  2. The person learning English who wants a reliable guide to the essentials of correct, confident expression.
  3. The teacher in UK or abroad who wants both a worked-through system of learning and a quick reference source.
  4. The person learning English without the aid of a teacher.

The material is based on years of successful experience of English teaching in the UK, Middle and Far East and Latin America to native speakers, complete beginners and pre-university candidates at Cambridge Certificate, Cambridge Board and International Baccalaureate levels.

It works by building blocks: each of the successful components of a sentence is clearly explained, leading to a quick, sure-fire sentence-building ‘kit’ which allows everyone to transpose thought into confident, correct expression. All teachers want to guide students in what is the right thing to do: this material does that. It has been written in response to the frequently-asked questions of students and teachers over the years. For example, how do I tell more about a noun? I use an adjective. But does the adjective go before or after the noun? Before? Always?

The material is also concise and easy to follow. Everything you need to know about verb tenses is shown in an easy-to-understand diagram. Fluent in five languages, this native English speaker has written the resource to cater for students’ needs for practical, to-the-point guidance which can be easily remembered.

Once purchased, the CD-ROM can be freely copied and networked throughout the school.
