Spelling, Apostrophes and Speech Marks consists of three modules, addressing the specific skills of Spelling, Apostrophes and Speech punctuation. Development over three years in the classroom, the material has proved successful with several KS3 groups, particularly in Year 7, as well as providing 'catch-up' material for foundation level GCSE students.

In addition to facilitating greater accuracy in written work, the frequent discussion points group tasks and challenges provide opportunities for developing Speaking and Listening (ENI) skills. Opportunity is given to consolidate earlier learning by revisiting familiar ground in a new context, and individual tasks suitable for classwork or homework are provided.

The three modules differ in approach, providing the variety necessary to engage pupils and maintain motivation, while detailed guidance given at each stage enables non-specialists as well as experienced English teachers to approach these modules with confidence. The activities aim to make learning enjoyable rather then a dry chore, so the emphasis is on strategies rather than rules.

The spelling module is structured in six planned 'Lessons', containing smaller sections that can also be used individually, giving maximum flexibility. The apostrophe module is shorter and offer strategies and practice to clarify the mystery surrounding this much misused and misplaced piece of punctuation. The third module moves from a very basic consideration of which words need to be enclosed within speech marks to a consideration of more advanced issues such as quotation within speech. Extension tasks involving direct speech and play script enable work to be differentiated according to abilities within the student group.
