String is the ultimate book for educating Special Needs people of all ages. It is a compilation of music and movement activities, poems and plays. The emphasis is on learning through rhyme and repetition accompanied with humour and fantasy. The book covers many aspects of the curriculum in an empathic manner.
A section of the poems incorporates various spatial concepts such as ‘enough, behind, between, beside, left and right, above, bent, straight’. Many of these concepts are difficult to teach in isolation and a fun approach makes learning more satisfying for both student and teacher.
Many of the poems could form the basis for art work. For people with learning difficulties, practical skills such as drawing and painting are essential avenues that allow them to reach their potential.
Music and movement are vital elements of the curriculum and are of great appeal to Special Needs people particularly those who are Down’s Syndrome or autistic. All the activities in the book can be adapted or modified to suit requirements.
The short plays give students the opportunity to increase their oral skills whilst enhancing their confidence. The pleasure they give and derive from participating is heartwarming quite apart from the benefit to their self-esteem. They are also adept at creating scenery. For them it is a rewarding aspect of the play and time should be allowed for it.
String is suitable for classroom and home situations and offers a wide range of teaching techniques.

Teachers of Special needs pupils will find this second Food Technology resource booklet full of worksheets to support their teaching in the food technology area. This booklet focuses on introducing the subject through raising awareness of: - Health and safety issues
- The tools used to prepare, cook and service food
- Taste and texture
- Storing food correctly in a fridge
- The visual appeal of prepared meals and packaged products
- The process of washing up
The emphasis is on pictorial representation, taking pupils abilities into consideration through the use of uncomplicated text and activities that allow pupils to show their understanding in ways other than writing out sentences. E.g. pupils are asked to match text to pictures, to 'cut and paste', to sequence events into the correct order. To support teaching to a range of ability levels it is suggested that teachers moderate or modify worksheets if appropriate. A suggested practice is to photocopy sheets to A3 size to present pupils with a larger area for drawing and creative activities. This would also support pupils who form large letters when writing. There are pages within this resource booklet that could be used to produce posters (by enlarging and cutting out the pictures). Where pupils are asked to 'cut and paste' or match pictures to text, simple reusable games could be made by copying the given pictures/text onto card, then cutting out the pictures/text to produce the sets of cards that pupils could match up or manipulate on their desk tops. Such sets of cards could be laminated. find out more |
A Year of Christian Celebration £58.74 Subject: Special Educational Needs / Philosophy Level: Secondary Age Group: 11 - 14 Order Number: 14068
This resource is written for pupils in mainstream school working at Key Stage 3 who have learning difficulties. It is hoped that the pupils could remain within the class working with a Teaching Assistant on this project. However, this resource could be used for younger children studying Christianity. This resource gives opportunity for some guided research to be carried out that could also be used to promote independent learning. Most of these exercises could be done independently if the pupil has a little guidance and help where necessary with the given text. Some might need help with the reading. This project requires a minimum amount of writing although longer pieces are suggested at times. find out more |
Sikhism £58.74 Subject: Special Educational Needs / Philosophy Level: Secondary Age Group: 11 - 14 Order Number: 14038
This Sikhism resource has been written to use with special need pupils in mainstream school. It is intended that the resource is used for secondary schools where pupils are working at a below average level, level 2 in some cases, and could also be used as a differentiated resource where there are pupils in a mixed ability classes. The simple texts and activities are designed for a minimum requirement of written work that would suit less able pupils, and there is plenty of opportunity to illustrate or use pictures instead of written answers. There is an amount of reading to be done but this could be done with adult supervision, or within a small group of less able pupils. The font used is that which will help the less able reader. It is intended that the majority of the activities could be completed with a minimum input from adults to create independent study. Some of the worksheets could be used for homework tasks again with the intention that they could be completed independently. The differentiated assessments at the back of the resource enable even a very low ability pupil to have the change of a good score by using the multiple choice assessment - thus creating a sense of achievement. find out more |
