The 'Perfume' Study Book is an innovative approach to literary analysis, in that 16-19 year old students are guided through key aspects of 'Perfume' via quotations, reference points and attention to literary technique. The Study Book is designed for students following an 'A' Level or IB 'A' Curriculum. The pre-reading activities stimulate initial interest in the novel and include useful pieces of background information with particular emphasis on key images and analogies. There is a questionnaire on the sense of smell and a brief introduction to sensory perception.
The 'Perfume' Study Book provides brief chapter notes and points of reference (including page numbers). Students are guided in their analysis of the novel through specific points of detail concerning plot, character, theme and literary technique (all including page numbers). Grenouille's movements are tracked on a map of France and significant images are highlighted throughout.
Post-reading encourages detailed character analysis, a consideration of the consequences of meeting Grenouille, a study of Grenouille's diction and an extension activity comparing 'Perfume' with a similar text chosen by the subject teacher.
