This book is an invaluable resource for all pupils and teachers of English. It supports and encourages the key skills of reading and writing, including spelling, style and vocabulary. It also provides valuable support for pupils with SATs and encourages extra reading and critical analysis.

Reading is dealt with in the form of useful information regarding reading skills and reading in an exam, whilst pupils are also advised on private reading and its importance. In support of this, a page is set aside for the pupil to record and monitor their own private reading and there is a list of books appropriate to 11-14 yr olds with informative comment on each one. Easier texts are labelled for weaker readers, as are the more challenging pieces of literature for strong readers.

Writing is dealt with in an innovative and original way, where skills and techniques of good writing are isolated and explained, with support from examples. With this approach, pupils become much more aware of the specifics of expression through a "Writing Index", which includes depth, vocabulary, varying sentence beginnings and numerous other techniques.
