Sussing Out Sources are a series of photocopiable original worksheets that provide a fun and innovative way for pupils to begin to acquire the necessary skills for investigating historical sources. They have been specifically designed to address a wide variety of history topics covered in Key Stage 3 pupils for the National Curriculum. Their main focus is in addressing the Key Element of 'Historical Enquiry' alongside those of 'Knowledge and Understanding' and 'Organisation and Communication'. In this respect they may also be used to aid the assessment of particular National Curriculum History Levels. No previous knowledge is required to work through the sheets thus ensuring minimum preparation time for teachers and pupils alike. They are perfect for providing pupils with an introduction to a new topic/unit, to enhance previous learning or as a re-cap. Sheets can be used separately or in conjunction with each other and/or the writing frames provided (and thus are a good device for assisting with extended writing skills).

The format of the worksheets mean they are very 'user friendly' and appeal to a wide variety of learning styles. Pupils are required to write/draw directly onto the sheets (once copied to A3 size), by answering a number of subject specific and non-subject specific questions. In effect the sheets nurture pupils into progressively looking more throughly at historical sources and thus begin to acquire the skills needed to become more competent in using historical sources. In this respect they can be particularly useful for SEN pupils as well as those of mainstream ability. Furthermore, once completed there is the option of reducing the A3 worksheets to A4 size, ensuring that pupils have a final finished product which may be fitted into a standard exercise book.

Topics covered by worksheets include:

Year 7
  • The Life of a Medieval Villein
  • The Black Death
  • The Medieval Church
  • The Crusades and Medieval Warfare
Year 8
  • Tudor Entertainment
  • Tudor Poor
  • The Spanish Armada

This new book is an ideal resource for the teaching of Leisure and Tourism to the 11-14 age range. It aims to be a comprehensive and up-to-date teaching aid, conveniently divided into ten chapters, each dealing with a separate topic. These range from an examination of the leisure and tourist industry past and present, through the roles played by airports and hotels and to the diverse range of employment created both directly and indirectly.

The book considers a range of destinations and the different types of transport available, as well as their advantages and disadvantages. Conflicting interests and the diverse needs of National Parks – using Dartmoor as an example – are also discussed. Drawing on similar examples, such as the Eden Project and Center Parcs, it encourages thought and debate about the place of education in tourism, as well as the impact of mass tourism itself on the world in which we travel. As this book is designed to compliment existing geography resources, it also aims to broaden children’s knowledge of global location, so a number of different atlas-based exercises are included. Contemporary issues such as sustainability and eco-tourism are also featured.

The book is lively, informative and illustrated. Ideal for mixed ability pupils, a range of exercises are included throughout, and subtly differentiated where appropriate. It is designed for ease of photocoping, and benefits from a comprehensive answers section and glossary, making it ideal for teachers who are not necessarily geography specialist’s or for supply teaching.find out more

Students are presented with a range of eye witness accounts, secondary sources and evidence of dubious provenance which they are then required to interrogate, cross-reference and draw conclusions from. The work will generate enthusiasm for History among students and encourage them to become involved with the subject. The book also contains teacher information, suggestions for computer work and homework activities.

The Roswell Mystery book is now also available with a 90 minute video, Area 51, from leading documentary film producers DD Video. The video includes footage of alleged alien space craft, interviews with eye-witnesses and allegations of government cover-ups which will provide plenty of sources to evaluate and talking points to widen pupils' evidence analysis skills.
