Test Tube Reactions are 'magic' notes, designed to enable the A-level chemistry student to make correct inferences from the test tube reactions that they carry out in A-level practicals, assessed practicals and practical exams. They are suitable for all A-level exam boards.

In many A-level practicals, and in the practical exams, a common exercise is for a student to carry out specified test tube reactions on an unknown substance. If the student has a copy of Test Tube Reactions as they carry out the various reactions, they can then make inferences as to the identity of the unknown substance and can also design additional tests to confirm their hunches. A-level exam boards also allow notes such as these to be taken into practical exams.

Test Tube Reactions notes are sufficiently short for the reactions to be easy to look up, yet sufficiently comprehensive to include all the test tube reactions commonly encountered by students at A-level. The tests are divided into three sections.

1. Tests for anions
2. Tests for cations
3. Tests for organic compounds

Where a range of outcomes is possible these are all given, and safety information about reagents, products and procedures is included where appropriate.
