The Audition - A Play for English and Drama

Bring the gritty world of Shakespeare into your classroom as you enjoy a romp through Elizabethan England! This original play is adapted from the 'Complete Works of Shakespeare', from which dialogue has been taken, and made into a separate play approximately 20-25 minutes long. The play is set in The Mermaid Tavern and focuses on three starving boy actors who are trying to see Shakespeare and persuade him to let them star in his new play (playing the female roles)! Do they succeed? Dialogue from Romeo & Juliet, Macbeth and Antony and Cleopatra is included.

The Audition has been performed to great acclaim at the Shakespeare Festival at the Globe Theatre Museum. Pupils who have seen Shakespeare in Love will appreciate the witty results.
