The History of Sport by Dr Bob Davis
Dr Bob Davis has been involved with physical education throughout his career. He is the lead author of Physical Education and the Study of Sport, Mosby, 2000, which is now in its 4th edition and he has written a series of teachers guides to give teachers additional background to the socio-cultural theory underlying physical education and sport. This particular set of books concerns the history of sport in the United Kingdom and as such involves a detailed analysis of the content related to the three A-level board specifications. Each book not only includes typical examination questions and their possible answers, but a variety of pictures, which help to capture the sporting events at that time and their place in society.
Book 1 concerns popular recreation and examines the development of sports and pastimes before the impact of the industrial and urban revolutions. The characteristics of these individual activities, games and sports festivals are examined in the context of a largely rural society and reflects the lifestyle of the people at the time.
Book 2 traces the introduction of this sporting culture into the 19th century public schools by the pupils themselves and the extent to which progressive headmasters used the playground as a vehicle to promote social control and moral integrity through physical endeavour. This trend eventually led to the emergence of a character building ethic based on athleticism and is epitomised in Tom Brown's School Days.
Book 3 reflects the adoption of this new highly respectable form of sport, with its support from an emergent middle class in an industrialised and urban society. This period often referred to as the 'formative years of sport' changed occasional, often violent past times into highly structured sporting events and occasions. This marked the emergence of amateurism as a joyful code of behaviour and resulted in the structure of professional games as the opium of the masses.
