The needs of able and gifted young people for suitable teaching materials led to the development of this Unit. The Preface details how the Unit is designed to be easily adapted to suit other (above average) pupils. Using the popular Collins Modern Classics paperback edition, the pupils’ worksheets facilitate independent work. Extensive (but concise and helpful) Appendices support classroom teachers with obscure areas; as do a full set of Correction Masters. Textual work is arranged chapter by chapter, with varied assignments in Reading, Writing, Talk and Listening. Language work is assigned where educationally most meaningful: in the context of the chapter. Wherever relevant, inserts focus on the Writer’s Craft.
Optional Cross Curricular Assignments follow, setting text anchored work in the context of wider world/curriculum beyond English departments. Research assignments (using ICT) incite linked work in Modern Studies, Philosophy, Art, Geography, Drama – as these emerge in the course of the novel.
