This tried and tested project has proved successful with pupils at KS3 (11-14 year olds). It prepares students for GCSE food technology through development of a novelty cake, from initial research through to final evaluation.
Students are given the opportunity to conduct a variety of research tasks and the project provides them with framework sheets, which ensure that enough detail is included. The project covers the four main cake-making methods and students are required to complete safety and quality check for each practical. (Supporting worksheets included). The evaluation sheets for each practical and some research tasks are available in differentiated format. Worksheets on functions of ingredients, cake making, and icing techniques are included and all information for their completion is provided. All cake recipes used are in A4 format. They can be placed in plastic wallets for student use during practicals.
Every worksheet has supporting material to enable students to complete the task independently. The exception is 'Evaluating Existing Products'. Teaching staff may have a supply of cake boxes for students to use, or the task can be given as homework for independent research.
Links with literacy, numeracy and citizenship are also included along with a curriculum map showing how the project meets the requirements of the National Curriculum Programme of Study.
A page of 'Key Words' can be used as it is or it can be enlarged on a photocopier for classroom display.
