Homework is a part of every properly planned course, but that planning often takes place a year in advance of the actual teaching. Anything can go wrong, and frequently does! Regular subject teachers may be absent, or the class may be at very different stages of development or progress. Or it may be something as simple as the teacher forgetting to plan homework for a particular day. It happens to the best of us. That's where this booklet becomes invaluable. It isn't a full homework scheme, because that's up to individual teachers and course leaders to devise, but here are twenty-five stand-alone tasks that can be inserted into your history course for use as and when needed. The photocopiable pages contain information for the student and a task to complete, which can be completed within any ordinary homework period. Some are simple experiments that the student can carry out at home, some ask 'Why does this happen?' or 'What is the importance of this?', and some are classic experiments that are described and require explanations for the given results. The student can complete the work on these sheets with minimal equipment. The tasks cover a wide age range, are user-friendly, and are easy for the teacher to assess using whatever marking scheme they usually employ. Most of the tasks can be used to either introduce new concepts or to reinforce or test existing knowledge and skills, and they can even be used as emergency lessons if the regular teacher is absent and the stand-in has little knowledge of the subject. Where necessary, answers and solutions have been provided.

Support Sheets for KS3 History: The Tudors & The Stuarts

The Tudors & the Stuarts Support Sheets are a series of photocopiable worksheets which support the teaching of History from the end of the Middle Ages to the reigns of William and Mary. The series covers most of the course 'The Making of the United Kingdom', as studied by Key Stage 3 pupils for the National Curriculum.

Although the sheets are simply worded, the whole course is covered in some detail. The Tudors & the Stuarts Support Sheets enable the students to have access to all relevant information in an easily accessible, yet attractively presented form.

The basic format of the sheets is to use cloze-type passages. The initial letter of each missing word is supplied, and the correct number of spaces is left for the letters. This enables even the weakest reader to succeed in completing the exercise. Each page has clear illustrations that can be coloured, copied or completed. Other activities include matching up jumbled sentences, and labeling exercises.

The support sheets are produced with decorative borders, in a hand-written format. This gives the pupils the feeling that the work has been specially drawn for them, giving a personal touch. The pupils will enjoy the often humorous, and sometimes slightly gruesome nature of the sheets.

The topics in each series include:

The Tudors
  • Life in the 1 500's
  • Henry VIII and the church
  • Edward VI
  • Mary I
  • Elizabeth I
  • The Elizabethans
The Stuarts
  • James I
  • Charles I
  • Civil War
  • Britain with no King
  • The Pilgrim Fathers
  • Restoration England
  • The Glorious Revolution
