The Journal Of S... is a writing project that is based on the plot of the quest adventure. It has a continuous storyline but large sections are missing which students provide. The fourteen sections build themselves into an illustrated book in diary form, this style of writing having been chosen to offer the immediacy of a personal and exciting experience.

The main aims of the Journal are:

• To develop English skills as described in the National Curriculum Programmes of Study
• To provide situations that encourage thoughtful and imaginative responses
• To produce a well structured and well crafted composition

The story texts and stimulus pictures can be photocopied and given to each student. A class reading and comprehension session then follows after which the activities are completed. When the work is finished the writing, diagrams, pictures and printed texts can be mounted in a project book in chronological order. The stimulus pictures can be used in the finished work but it is obviously of greater educational value if students produce their own illustrations if time allows.
