Pack J3 - The Napoleonic Wars

The ideas of the French Revolution were personified in the person of Napoleon Bonaparte and through his generalship carried to almost every corner of Europe in the years 1795-1802. In 1799 he overthrew the Government of the First Republic (the Directory), made himself 1st Consul (dictator), then consul for life and in 1804 Emperor. In the headlong pursuit of power for himself and his family, and military glory for France, the ideas of the French Revolution were lost sight of, and the war that broke out again in 1804 was directed not at resisting revolutionary ideas, but overthrowing the territorial domination of Europe by Imperial France.

Britain was Napoleon's principal target in the years 1804-1805 and his plans for affecting an invasion, and Nelson's frustrating of those plans culminating in the Battle of Trafalgar (October 1805), form the first part of this section. This includes an in-depth study of the flagship HMS Victory. A composite map and graph track Napoleon's rise to the summit of power (1807) after smashing Pitt's third coalition and campaign maps show the main stages of the Peninsula War, the march on Moscow and the Waterloo Campaign. The final sheets deal with the Congress of Vienna and the re-settlement of Europe (1815).
