H.G. Wells’ astonishingly imaginative first novels not only largely founded the genre of science fiction, they are often supreme examples of its various strands.

More than a century after publication, The Time Machine (twice filmed) remains the best satirical forecast of how Earth and our human society may develop. Wells’ Time Traveller leaps through Time to meet our eventual descendants; then, in an extraordinary feat of imagination, voyages onwards to witness the end of our own Earth. The quality of Wells’ English is consistently high, as is the clarity of his thinking.

The needs of gifted and talented young people to have suitable teaching materials led to the development of this Unit.

The Preface details how the Unit is designed to be easily adapted to suit other (above-average) pupils.

Using the popular Heinemann Windmills edition, the pupils’ worksheets facilitate independent work. Extensive (but concise and helpful) Appendices support classroom teachers with obscure areas; as do a full set of Correction Masters. Textual work is arranged chapter-by-chapter, with varied assignments in Reading, Writing, Talk and Listening. Language-work is assigned where educationally most meaningful: in the context of the chapter. Wherever relevant, inserts focus on the Writer’s Craft.

Optional Cross-Curricular Assignments follow, setting text-anchored work in the context of wider world / the curriculum beyond the English department: Research (using ICT), Modern Studies, Philosophy, Art, Geography, Drama, etc; as these emerge in the course of the novel.

Once purchased the CD can be freely copied and networked throughout the school.
