Using the Hot Potatoes programme, students can reinforce their learning and effectively revise at their own pace or working together with their peers.
The Treaty of Versailles is a popular topic common to twentieth century GCSE syllabi. This software will lend variety and freshness to a content-laden unit. There are seven applications that cover all the major issues relating to the treaty from the aims of the Great Powers at Versailles through to its consequences. A crossword, matching of key words to definitions and a quiz on the terms are just some of the techniques used. Pupils' answers are automatically marked and a score is given at the end of each activity.
This resource should be accessible to all GCSE candidates. The non-subject specific language, including instructions, has been kept as simple as possible. Teachers can decide which applications a pupil should tackle as they vary in difficulty and a 'statistics' quiz provides an extension task. Scores could be recorded then the activities could be repeated at a later date and progress compared. A competitive element within the class could be introduced.
This is a flexible resource that lends itself to a variety of teaching contexts from whole class using an interactive whiteboard, to individual learning. Pupils often lack the motivation to engage constructively in revision. This resource will help change this attitude.
