This booklet deals with the exciting story of the Trojan War. It is based, in drama form, around four episodes of the Iliad of Homer. In each lesson there is a short introduction; a short drama; and then six sections of follow up work for the pupils. These sections are:- A Questions on the Story; B Find Out, C Comprehension; D How does it feel?; E Opinions; F As you see it (a section for creative work). It is designed for pupils of mixed ability, aged 11-14. The varied range of activities should lend itself to the varied speed of pupils completing the tasks, as teachers have the flexibility to decide which sections of work to concentrate on. The pictures and cartoons have been done by youngsters over the years and may give pupils ideas for some of the possible creative assignments.
It could be used in Classical Studies, English and Drama classes. Some teachers may like to develop the dramas, others the creative work, or it may be used in the more traditional ways of learning about the Trojan War. The six sections of activities are designed to foster different aptitudes in pupils, from basic knowledge and understanding to finding things out for themselves; from exploring the feelings of characters to shaping their own ideas through the giving of opinions or through creative work.
Pupils are encouraged to note the origin of words and phrases like 'Achilles heel' and 'Trojan horse'.
It is hoped that pupils will enjoy the variety of activity involved and will want to learn more about Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, and other tales from Green mythology.
