This resource pack will provide a solid foundation of information for a classroom course on the Great War. It also contains many suggestions for students’ own tasks. Virtually every page has suggested questions, based on the topic or on selected sources. Teachers will easily be able to adapt these to their own needs, or use the sources with their own style of tasks.
Research directions are also indicated, with some appropriate websites. For students studying the literature or historical controversies, there are chapters which will stimulate thought and debate. The topics combine tow of the iconic battles of the Western Front with a variety of experiences which the men and women of the time would have faced, giving students a genuine taste of life in the front line. Local history is also introduced. Students are encouraged to look for signs of the war in their local area, and some interesting examples are included in the sources.
This pack encourages schools to gain first hand experience of the Western Front through visiting the area. The photographs and descriptions may remind some of exciting tours and motivate others. Most importantly the material has been planned to help students enjoy studying a topic which is becoming increasingly relevant and popular.
