This material is designed to help students follow modules about equality and diversity relevant both to Religious Education and Citizenship in all exam boards. It would particularly benefit gifted and talented pupils though there are tasks available for a range of abilities, developing personal insights into issues of equality.
This is a new type of course about differences between people and about equality. The material was developed through academic research and interaction with enthusiastic pupils.
It is a course with eight sections dedicated to a single theme that human beings have a dignity, an intrinsic value, a value that must not be defaced. The struggle for human rights and for equality is essentially about us having an equal value as people too!
Devaluation of others has been a theme in history. In extreme, devaluing others leads to de-humanising them. When we do that, we fail to see people like us with feelings and an identity. Difference does not mean that different layers of wealth and importance are formed, it relegates others to being inferior, less than us.
Women and men, slaves, rich people, poor people, children and the elderly, the disabled, those from different ethnic backgrounds are equally valuable and have a dignity to be recognised and appreciated. The idea that there is equal human value is the real point about human rights. It is an arena where further battles are fought to defuse conflict today.
