The resources in this toolkit have been designed for use in Physical Education courses at secondary level.
Each section has one or more brief information pages, which should be complemented by other material presented to the students. These pages are followed by several activities related to the information given. These may be simple worksheets that are largely completed with reference only to the information page; exploratory or experimental activities that allow students to confirm or reinforce their understanding of the information given; and extension or interest activities that allow students to extend their knowledge or understanding.
Some of the activities require students, working in pairs, to carry out exercises to a set rhythm. You will need to organise your own method for providing this rhythm. The easiest method is to get the partner to use a watch with a seconds hand, and to either clap or say 'beep' in time with a desired rhythm. For a more accurate method record the desired rhythms onto a tap or CD using a metronome or similar.
Students will need careful guidance when undertaking the exercises and when preparing their own training programmes. They should complete an appropriate health questionnaire before starting the programme and should give informed consent to participate. All students must be clearly aware that they should cease exercise at the first sign of discomfort; that they have the right to cease participation at any time; and that such action will not disadvantage them in any way.
