'Understanding Russia' is an outline of the key themes in the study of 19th century Russia 1840-1860's.

A multi-layered, fully animated PowerPoint presentation designed to enhance the study of 19th century Russia. Slides outline the context of Tsarist Russia under Nicholas I and discuss the necessity for Russian modernisation in the face of growing economic, political and socio-cultural pressures.

The characters of Nicholas I and Alexander II are analysed in depth, and emancipation is broadly covered with a focus on its causes, the content of the reform and its consequences. The presentation is based on resources that have achieved great success at AS Level but the structure of the presentation makes the package ideal for ages 14-18 years. The resource provides the stimulus for a series of lessons covering the period. The presentation is also invaluable as a revision aid.
