An ideal language lesson begins with a 'warm-up' of familiar structures in order to establish the foreign language environment. Pupils can be actively involved with visuals and a brisk pace can capture their interest.

New language can be introduced with pictures, either enlarged to flashcard size or on an OHT. A few items are presented at a time e.g. chat, souris, chien, lapin, and the range is gradually extended.

The teacher can practise new vocabulary by using various games, for example Kim's game, noughts and crosses or bingo.

Giving each pupil a copy of the vocabulary sheet reinforces language, and pictures and words can be matched verbally or by writing.

Pupils can work in pairs with one copy of the sheet, where pictures are cut up and matched, or in groups where a task can be shared between several pupils.

A number of quizzes are also included for written consolidation, either for use in class or for homework

To 'wind-down' at the end of a lesson, vocabulary or spelling taught can be consolidated by a variety of the techniques mentioned. Pictures suit these purposes very well, and the games are tried and tested for success!
