This is a new, versatile, enjoyable and visually memorable resource on CD-ROM for 10 to 16 years olds, created by Barbara Orme, an experienced SEN and EAL teacher. It employs a whole brain approach, ideal for use with pupils who have literacy difficulties or are bi-lingual.

42 units including sound maps, cards and worksheets show different ways to spell each sound used in English. English spelling's complexity means we must learn several options for writing each sound. Sound mapping gives the big picture. Colour is used to link words on cards with the corresponding branch of a sound map, while pictures and key words illustrate the spelling options for each sound. Worksheets, non-colour cards and outline sound maps to colour in and add to, support and reinforce correct spelling options. Each sound unit consists of a colour sound map printable up to A3 size, to use for wall display or as a learning mat; an A4 outline sound maps to colour in; colour and black and white word cards to read, match, short and copy or for use with games; worksheets for identifying or filling in the correct spelling of the sound.

Pupils enjoy the activities and more confident readers can work independently, once they are familiar with using the resources. Sound maps can be used in conjunction with most existing phonically based worksheets and spelling rules.
