The booklet has been developed to help the French assistant (e) or the teacher to prepare Year 12 students for the oral examination. The booklet contains a range of exemplar questions and answers suitable for the general conversation. Also included are grammatical exercises, lists of useful vocabulary and extensive exercises to aid improvement of the students’ pronunciation.
The materials have been developed over the past five years, following the advice of different assistants and feedback from the students entering the examination. It is most suitable to meet the new guidelines for the oral examination. It has been designed so that the assistant can work independently or in the case of no assistant, the teacher can be set tasks to the students to work on their own.
In FR1, the general conversation is based on the following topics|: leisure, education and future plans. The booklet starts with “Moi, ma famille et ma région”, because it is a topic familiar to the students and facilitates the transition to A/S level.
The weekly oral lesson should start with exercises on pronunciation. Depending on the ability of the student, only one sound should be practiced. The assistant reads the words first and the students repeat afterwards and are corrected orally if necessary. For the rest of the lesson, the assistant works through the questions and the possible answers with the student who needs to write his/her own answers.
