What Next? originally funded by the Home Office, was described by Nick Ross from BBC's Crimewatch as 'A project that can help equip young people with the skills and confidence to escape being pressured into situations that are harmful to others and bad for themselves'. What Next? allows pupils to explore the issues and feelings facing both the victims of bullying and their aggressors as well as looking at how bullying may lead to street crime, through the use of real case histories. The pack provides young people with a popular means of expressing and exploring their feelings about risky, but all too common subjects. The links from bullying to robbery and from acquisitive crime to illegal drugs are firmly established by research. The pack contains video and photocopiable material, which are the result of workshops and discussions with the author's pupils sharing their own experiences. The pack encourages the teacher to use the experiences of their own students as a starting point for their own drama.
The sections which follow the rehearsal process gone through whilst devising the video, provide a variety of discussion points, well structured classroom activities and resources along with advice on hotseating and role play scenarios. What Next? will make a significant contribution to both the Drama and PSHE curriculum, with additions of incorporating use of language, script writing and performing arts.
By looking at both the bullying and the victim, the pack encourages pupils to gain an understanding of how a person may deal with the problems that bullying presents. At the same time it encourages better behaviour both at school and beyond and can be adapted for use by any age group.
The vision of the authors is that the video and workpack become the springboard for each group to explore the topic in their own way.
