Wordplay - Dancing With Words - Powering Poetry

The three packages of poetry focused work in this original material provide creative contexts through which to explore language features as well as basic poetic techniques. They are particularly useful as vocabulary builders and for encouraging dictionary and thesaurus work. Each package comes with a set of detailed teachers' notes covering teaching approaches and possible student responses. Word and sentence level language features are made explicit through structured students' notes, and various poetic techniques are taught and explored through carefully planned stages. The creative context is a paramount feature and the varied units engage students through lively and often humorous models for their own creative writing.

There are three photocopiable packages, each containing 8-9 units of work:

Wordplay (age 11) - poetic word games encouraging students to write in rhyming couplets, match syllabic patterns, write noun and verb poems, explore homophones and homographs, and experiment with haiku and beheadings.

Dancing With Words (age 12) - introductions to experimental writing including found poetry, humuments, concrete poetry, cut up poetry, pataxanadu, acrostics, adverb poems and kennings.

Powering Poetry (age 13) - lively and original ideas for writing a wide range of poetry, including experimenting with rhyme, starting lines, copying styles, collaborative writing, and guidance on editing techniques.
