This resource has been designed to use with EAL or lower ability students. It provides a brief synopsis of the story and how it unfolds. The characters are analysed individually before the story is introduced chapter by chapter. Each chapter explains the connection between the characters and how the plot unfolds to its conclusion.

At the end of each chapter there is a task which is designed to reinforce the student’s grasp of all the key points they need to understand. The set tasks will challenge the learner to work at their own pace and at the end of each session guided group discussion can take place.

Students will learn to recognise grammar, style, punctuation and spelling. Specialised vocabulary related to the text and new concepts can be discussed prior to reading or incorporated within the session. This resource should be used for skills knowledge and understanding and the use of reference material, i.e. dictionaries to find the meaning of unfamiliar words is to be encouraged.

This resource helps students summarise key information about the novel and then offers practice questions drawing on what they have learned. Additionally it gives a clear, structured approach and shows pupils what actually happens on test days in the form of questions.
