Science Worksheets for Lower Ability 11 to 14 year olds is a new series of resources for Science which is aimed at lower ability pupils in years 7 and 8. It can be used alongside the Spotlight Science scheme or as a stand alone resource for less able pupils. The material is highly flexible and covers all KS3 concepts using simple sentence structures but omitting none of the key Science concepts. The topics have been compiled into separate photocopiable write-in booklets, with each double page spread covering one concept. These can be copied full size as A3 worksheets or reduced to A4 size, as appropriate.

The booklets enable pupils who may have reading and writing difficulties to enjoy science and make real progress by reducing the amount of written work required. Key ideas are clearly printed in the books and illustrated where appropriate with 3-D drawings showing how to use the apparatus. Each book has a summary check-list at the back listing what pupils should understand. The books have not been designed to be easy lessons, for they depend on the teacher talking around each sheet.

The format of the booklets encourages discussion and questions from pupils, to deepen their understanding of the topics. The booklets provide a structured framework, while allowing teachers to include their own ideas. Space for teachers to incorporate their own extension work is included. Teaching colleagues recommend these resources where absenteeism may be a problem because the structure of the work and the key concepts are laid out for the pupils when they return.
