This resource is a series of twenty-five argumentative issues with an introduction to the key points of the issue, strong 'for' and 'against' short essays offered with comprehension questions (normally one question per paragraph), and a mixture of extension questions, activities, stimulus material (poems, essay extracts, stories etc) and ICT activities. There are many ways to use the material. A further way is to analyse the essays looking at the devices used to construct an argument; the essays use all sorts of devices to make their points. Emotive language, appeals to authority, rhetorical flourishes, personal examples etc. are all there and more! There are as many ways to use this material as there are English teachers.
These essays provide models which is why this resource is needed. At GCSE in particular students generally either have to write an argumentative essay or prepare oral coursework on an issue. Here is a wealth of examples for students in GCSE to study and explore.
