This resource is designed to help overcome the problems that can arise in using scientific calculators in the school or college classroom.
The first of these problems is that many students do not know how to operate their calculators correctly. This is further exacerbated by the fact that they have often mislaid the calculator’s accompanying user guide. Even those who have this to hand often experience considerable difficulty in understanding the information because of the way in which it is presented.
The aim of this resource is to introduce students to some of the functions and facilities that a typical scientific calculator can offer in a clear and simple manner.
It comprises six powerpoint presentations (54 slides) which teachers can use to translate the contents of the manufacturer’s User Guide into a more visual, user-friendly format.
Each presentation focuses on a particular facility or family of facilities afforded by the calculator.
These are:
- INTRODUCTION – BODMAS
- FUNCTIONS, POWERS, ROOTS
- DEGREES, MINS, SECS
- FRACTIONS
- DISPLAY ACCURACY
- MEMORY
They are based on a typical “natural display” Casio calculator but reference is made, where appropriate, to other models/makes. The selected Input/Output format is “Linear”.
In addition to using the resource in the classroom, teachers can avoid endlessly explaining to individual students how their calculator works by placing it on a school or college computer network.
This resource is the first in a planned series whose aim is to introduce many of the functions and facilities offered by a scientific calculator.
Once purchased, the CDs can be freely copied and networked throughout the school.
