Often students approach with some trepidation the task of coming to grips with modern Christian thought as required by many exam boards. There is a lack of easy reference materials that will break down this complex subject and make it easier to see the wood from the trees.

Walking with Giants is a new resource for A-level R.S. It is designed to address a need to introduce some twentieth century thinkers and theologians to students who opt for papers in all exam boards on Modern Christianity, Church History or Christian belief. It is an exciting PowerPoint Presentation that will expose students to a range of ideas and different ways of formulating Christian thought in the twentieth century.

34 slides provide an introduction to the thinking of Hans Ur Von Balthasar, Karl Barth, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Rudolf Bultmann, Hans Küng, Jurgen Moltmann, Wolfhart Pannenberg, Karl Rahner, Albert Schweitzer, Paul Tillich, Liberation Theology (referring to Gutierrez), Black Theology (James Cone) and Feminist Theology (Radford Ruether). The emphasis is on providing an overview so that students can see ‘the big picture’ as to who these key thinkers and theologians were and what they taught. The distinctive approach by each of them is brought out and a summary given that will hopefully stimulate further reading within the framework given in Walking with Giants!

It is recommended that the Presentation be made in chunks, perhaps one or two thinkers at a time to allow for further comment by the teacher and to generate discussion by the students.

Once purchased, the CD can be freely copied and networked throughout the school.
