This material provides an opportunity for young learners of all abilities, to appreciate something of the life and teaching of Jesus and those wishing to study for an external examination such as the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE). The materials can be introduced in the form of a module contract where learners are expected to be able to interpret teachings, understand sources, authority figures and ways of life, at the same time, attempting to understand the beliefs, values and attitudes of others. The materials help learners develop an understanding of how moral values and a sense of obligation can come from beliefs and experience. At the same time they are provided with opportunities to evaluate their own and others’ values, make informed, rational and imaginative choices and in so doing, appreciate the impact beliefs have on peoples’ lives. The task assignment sheets place emphasis on learning and the need to change practices for individual supported studies. At examination level there is need to negotiate a contract with learners, agreeing what they will do and the time involved for individual pieces of work or a study module. At the same time, teachers are able to cater for varying abilities and very different work rates. This material will provide teachers the chance to create space for themselves – necessary for effective records of achievement and contextual tutoring. Formative assessment of social skills can be made if a teacher can observe pupils while they are working together during lesson time.
