English language learners and students with special needs struggle to meet curricular expectations in our schools. The adapted version of The Crucible for ages 14-18, provides the connection to the original text, permitting English language learners and students with special needs to perform in mainstream academic literature classes. The original text appears beside the adapted version, promoting student comprehension. Throughout, vocabulary is highlighted in the original text and definitions are underlined in the adaptation. A summary of the plot, characters, and setting introduces each act. Page numbers or the original text corresponds to the adaptation, allowing students to keep pace with the class and later, to find quotations to augment writing assignments. The adapted version lends itself well to oral productions, permitting Ells and other students to practice their intonation and pronunciation, at an appropriate English proficiency level. In short, Ells can learn reading, writing, speaking and thinking skills, in mainstream classes, by using adapted resources. What could be better motivation for students to actively participate in mainstream classes!
